Hearing Aid Buying Guide
Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Hearing Aids
Buying hearing aids shouldn’t feel confusing or pressured. This guide covers what to look for, what to avoid, and how to make sure you end up with the right pair for your life.
Step 1
Start With a Proper Hearing Assessment
Before you look at any hearing aid, you need to know what’s actually happening with your hearing. A comprehensive hearing assessment tells us which frequencies you’re missing, how severe the loss is,
and what type of hearing loss you have.
This matters because the right hearing aid for one person may be completely wrong for another.
Someone who mostly struggles with high-pitched sounds like children’s voices needs a different solution to someone who finds everything muffled.
At Shire Hearing, hearing tests and assessments are free for seniors and pensioners. For everyone else, we offer a comprehensive assessment that forms the foundation of your entire hearing care plan.
Step 2
Know What Actually Matters When Choosing
There’s a lot of marketing noise in the hearing aid industry. Here are the
things that genuinely matter when choosing the right device.
Your hearing loss
The type and degree of your hearing loss determines which styles and technology levels are even suitable for you. A mild loss opens up more options. A severe loss narrows the field. This isn’t something you guess at. It comes from your assessment.
Your lifestyle
How you spend your days matters more than most people realise. If you’re regularly in noisy environments like cafés, restaurants, or family gatherings, you’ll benefit from more sophisticated noise processing. If your days are quieter, a simpler device may work perfectly well.
Comfort and fit
A hearing aid you don’t wear is a hearing aid that doesn’t work. Comfort is everything. That includes how the device feels in or behind your ear, how easy it is to put in and take out, and whether you can manage the controls comfortably.
Visibility
Some people want the smallest, most invisible device possible. Others couldn’t care less. Both are completely valid. Just be aware that smaller devices come with trade-offs in battery life, features, and power.
Connectivity
Many modern hearing aids connect to your phone via Bluetooth, letting you stream calls, music, and television audio directly to your ears. Some models work with companion apps that let you adjust settings discreetly. If this matters to you, it’s worth discussing during your consultation.
Battery type
You’ll choose between rechargeable and disposable batteries. Rechargeable models charge overnight and last a full day. Disposable batteries need replacing every few days to two weeks depending on the size. Rechargeable is the more popular choice these days for convenience.
Step 3
Understand Technology Levels
Hearing aids come in different technology levels, often described as budget, mid-range, and premium. Here’s what that actually means in plain language.
Budget Level
Amplifies sound and provides basic
noise management. Works well in quieter environments like one-on-one conversations and watching television at home. A solid starting point for people with simpler listening needs.
Mid-Range Level
Better performance in moderately noisy environments. More channels and more refined sound processing, which means speech clarity improves in places like small group conversations and family dinners. This is where most people find a good balance between performance and value.
Premium Level
The most advanced sound processing available. Designed for complex listening environments like busy restaurants, large gatherings, and outdoor settings with wind and traffic. These devices adapt automatically to your surroundings and deliver the smoothest, most natural sound quality.
Every manufacturer designs their best technology for the premium level and then scales features down to fit lower price points. That doesn’t mean budget devices are bad. It means the higher the level, the more refined the listening experience, especially in challenging environments.
The only way to know which level is right for you is to try them.
That’s why we offer a free two-week trial where you experience each level in your own environment. We switch you between levels every couple of days so the comparison is clear and recent. Most people are surprised by which level actually feels right for them.
Step 4
Try Before You Buy
This is where Shire Hearing’s approach is genuinely different from most clinics.
We offer a free, no-obligation two-week hearing aid trial. You take the devices home and wear them in your real life. Family dinners, television, cafés, grandkids, the beach. That’s where hearing actually happens, and that’s where the
right hearing aid becomes obvious.
During the trial, we’ll check in every couple of days and switch you between technology levels. You’ll compare budget, mid-range, and premium in your own environments so you can make an informed decision based on experience,
not a brochure.
Our technology can even track the acoustic environments you’ve been in during the trial. When you come back,
we analyse that data together and use it to recommend the most suitable product for how you actually live.
If you love them, great. If not, you simply return them. No questions asked. No pressure. No obligation.

Hear it for yourself
“My introduction to Shire Hearing was with my mother who lives in Cronulla, I live in Wollongong. Rachel was very caring with my mother who will be 99 on Anzac Day 2020.
My experience with hearing aids started when I mentioned my tinnitus, during the conversation I realised Rachel was very knowledgeable and she told me when I started to lose my hearing, wearing hearing aids would help. They did!”
We had a lovely experience from booking to assessment. The clinic is accessible and they had loads of availability at the Engadine location. The assessor was gentle and relaxed and created a calm and fun environment for our child. 5 stars 🌟
Honestly the most amazing place to get your hearing tests done ✅. I’ve never felt more welcomed & safe before & highly highly recommend the lovely Krystal @ Engadine Clinic. Such great service and knowledge , I couldn’t recommend enough. Please choose Shire hearing Engadine for your next appointment ❤️.
What a great and calm experience! Krystal connected straight away with my toddler son, She took the time to play and engage with my son other than just for testing.
Usually my son is hard to get to cooperate with visual assessments of his ears, but he was happy and comfortable with Krystal.
Would highly recommend Shire Hearing Engadine!
Krystal at Shire Hearing was fantastic with our two neurodiverse boys. She had them cooperating, engaged and interested. And she picked up a previously unknown issue so we can look into it further. Fantastic experience and service!
They are amazing. Any issue with hearing aids they fix for free. Even if it’s just changing the filters. When I was choosing my new hearing aids they lent programmable ones to try and compare. I got the top ones in the end. The programs on the App are also designed just for me which helps adjusting in noisy environments.
FAQs
Hearing aids typically range from around $3,600 to $9,000 for a pair, depending on the technology level and style. This includes your assessment, fitting, programming, warranty, and aftercare. If you’re a pensioner or DVA cardholder, you may be eligible for free or subsidised services.
We’re an independent, family-owned practice. We don’t have sales quotas or manufacturer incentives. Our free two-week trial lets you compare different technology levels yourself so your decision is based on your own experience, not a sales pitch. We’ve built our reputation over 18 years by recommending what’s genuinely best for each person.
The main difference is how well the hearing aids perform in complex listening environments. Premium devices offer more refined sound processing, better background noise management, and smoother automatic adjustments. Budget devices work well in quieter settings. The best way to understand the difference is to experience it during your trial.
We’d strongly recommend against it. Hearing aids need to be programmed to your specific hearing loss and properly fitted to your ears. An off-the-shelf or online device isn’t calibrated to you, which means it likely won’t perform well and could even make things more difficult. You also miss out on professional aftercare, ongoing adjustments, and warranty support.
You’re not alone. Many people come to us after a disappointing experience elsewhere. Often the issue was a poor fit, the wrong technology level, or not enough time to adjust. Hearing aid technology has also improved significantly in recent years. Our trial process is designed to give you a genuinely good first experience so you can judge the technology fairly.
If you’re a pensioner or DVA cardholder, you may be eligible for free hearing aids and services through the Australian Government Hearing Services Program. We hold a government contract and can manage the entire application process for you. Just let us know when you book.
Most hearing aids last between four and six years with proper care. Your hearing may also change over time, which can mean your devices need reprogramming or eventually replacing. We include annual hearing checks and maintenance in your aftercare package to keep everything performing at its best.
Your care doesn’t stop at the fitting. Your hearing aids come with a manufacturer warranty, annual hearing checks, reprogramming as needed, and unlimited maintenance support during the warranty period. You can drop in anytime for a clean or adjustment. No appointment needed.
