How do you know if you have Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is characterised by hearing sounds that are not present in the external environment. These sounds can include ringing, buzzing, hissing, clicking, or other types of noise, and they may be heard in one or both ears. Tinnitus can be temporary or persistent and can range from mild to severe.

The word ‘tinnitus’ comes from the Latin word ‘tinnire’, meaning ‘to ring or tinkle’, and therefore is a term used to describe the phantom sensation of ringing in the ears.

What are the symptoms?

Do you often hear a sound that you know is not externally present? Are you experiencing ringing, roaring, clicking, chirping, rushing, whistling, buzzing, hissing, or humming? Or does it sound like a heartbeat in your ear? You may have Tinnitus

What causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, but it can also be caused by various other factors, including exposure to loud noise, ear infections, head injuries, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. In some cases, the cause of Tinnitus may not be clear

How does Tinnitus affect your life?

While Tinnitus can be very distressing and impact a person's quality of life, it is not usually a sign of a serious underlying health problem. However, it is important to see a healthcare professional if you experience Tinnitus, especially if it is sudden or accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, or difficulty hearing.

Can Tinnitus be treated?

Although there is no one cure for Tinnitus, there are many different ways it can be managed, including:

• Hearing aids
• Masking
• Managing potential hearing loss
• Directive counselling
• Psychological Considerations and Referral
• Sound therapy
• Limiting your intake of specific foods and drinks
• Considering physiological factors
